Fairfield, CA (March 9, 2010) – The BioPerine® Patent and Trademark License Agreement between Scientific Food Solutions and Sabinsa Corporation for “field of use in dietary supplements compositions comprised of ascorbic acid and Vitamin C” incorporating BioPerine in FAST-C™ has been renewed. The agreement covers the US, Canada, Europe, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines and Australia.

FAST-C, the subject of two US-based double blind, randomized crossover clinical trials, is a premium, faster absorbing and well-retained Vitamin C product. It utilizes a unique, patent-pending composition that provides a buffered and 90%+ acid neutralized Vitamin C, delivering Vitamin C with greater speed and excellent retention in an easily tolerated formulation that fosters greater compliance. FAST-C contains BioPerineâ, the patented bioavailability enhancement ingredient from Sabinsa Corporation, through a semi-exclusive licensing agreement.

BioPerine® is the only product sourced out of piperine to obtain a patented status for its ability to increase the bioavailability of nutritional compounds. Sabinsa’s patent was reaffirmed by the US Patent office last year,  BioPerine is the only source of piperine to have undergone clinical studies in the U.S. to substantiate its safety and efficacy for nutritional use.

“We are extremely pleased to be working with Sabinsa on this next generation of Vitamin C ingredients,” said Scientific Food Solutions president Gretchen Reece. “The breakthroughs we have achieved making vitamin C more easily tolerated for better compliance are significantly enhanced and complemented by the addition of BioPerine, delivering significant results to the consumer.”

“This agreement is a perfect fit for Sabinsa, given that all the principals involved in FAST-C have demonstrated a solid commitment to science and Intellectual Property similar to our own,” said Shaheen Majeed, Sabinsa Marketing Director.

FAST-C, innovated by Scientific Food Solutions and distributed by E.T. Horn, received the NBJ 2009 Scientific Achievement Award, and is one of three finalists for the 2010 NutrAward for the Best New Ingredient.

A Clinical Evaluation Comparing the Bioavailability of Two Buffered Vitamin C Supplements in Healthy, Non-smoking Males

Kirenia Labiste CRC, Samantha Feldman MS, RD, Diane R. Krieger, M.D, Douglas Kalman PhD. Nutrition& Endocrinology, Miami Research Associates, Miami, FL

Purpose: To determine and compare the relative bioavailability of vitamin C (AA) from Comfort C® (with Bioperine®) and Ester-C® in healthy, nonsmoking, young males.

Methods: Five males (32.0 ± 6.2 years) received a single, 1 gram dose of AA from 2 different AA products in random order, EACH dose preceded by at least 7 days of a low AA diet. Blood was drawn pre-ingestion and 30, 60, 90, 120, 210 and 240 minutes postingestion for serum AA analysis by HPLC. Average urine concentrations of AA were determined by twenty-four hour collection and HPLC analysis.

Results: Weight adjusted AA concentration changes from baseline were significantly higher with Comfort C than Ester-C at 60 minutes (4.33±1.47 ug/ml vs 1.68±0.90; p=0.043). Peak AA concentrations tended to be the same between the two products. Urinary AA concentrations did not differ between treatments.

Conclusions: Although there were no differences in the overall absorption between the AA products over the 4-hour test period, with Comfort C displaying a faster rate of absorption than Ester-C.

This study was conducted using the previous product name, Comfort C. The formulation remains the same but the product name is now Fast-C.

Abstract:

PURPOSE: This randomized, comparator, crossover study was designed to compare the effects of Aqua-Lyte®, a non-caloric, alkalized electrolyte water beverage with Gatorade®, a caloric electrolyte sports drink, on hydration in female volunteers.

METHODS: Ten healthy females (18-45 yo) with at least 6 months of exercise experience completed two climate-controlled treadmill exercise sessions (separated by at least 3 days) resulting in dehydration, defined as a minimum 2% body weight (BW) reduction. Re-hydration fluid volume was 1.25 pints per lb BW lost. Blood/urine samples were collected pre-exercise and 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes post-beverage consumption. Primary objectives were serum osmolality and hematocrit; secondary objectives were serum sodium, serum potassium, urine specific gravity (Usg), and BW recovery. Perceived taste and thirst were also assessed.

RESULTS: The rehydration characteristics of the two beverages were similar. No significant differences between the groups were observed at any of the post consumption time points [serum osmolality (p=0.114; 0.219; 0.124; 0.299), hematocrit (p=0.086; 0.339; 0.764; 0.912), serum sodium (p=<0.001; <0.001; 0.007; 0.008) and Usg (p=0.397; 0.833; 0.410; 0.581)]. No beverage was demonstrably superior to the other with respect to any of the efficacy endpoints.

CONCLUSIONS: Aqua-Lyte®, with its zero calorie value, was no different from Gatorade® in terms of its rehydrating effects in exercise induced dehydration among active females. Sponsored by Scientific Food Solutions, LLC

ZERO-CALORIE AQUA-LYTE HYDRATES AS WELL AS TRADITIONAL SPORTS DRINKS

All-natural new water beverage presents exercise hydration without the calories

A new study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting today, demonstrates that Aqua-Lyte®, an all natural, zero-calorie, zero sweetener water beverage, developed by researchers for Scientific Food Solutions, LLC, for active persons hydrates as well as a leading sports/electrolyte drink, but does not contain any of the sugars, calories, and artificial ingredients many sports beverages offer consumers.

Gretchen Reece, President of Scientific Food Solutions (http://www.scientificfoodsolutions.com) said, “Aqua-Lyte® is for all active people who do not want or need the extra calories or artificial ingredients provided in many traditional sports drinks. Our pilot study shows that Aqua-Lyte® equals the hydration effects of a leading sports/electrolyte beverage, but only Aqua-Lyte® is designed with the calorie-conscious female fitness fan in mind. With added electrolytes but no artificial sweeteners or ingredients, Aqua-Lyte® tastes like water but hydrates as well as a sports drink. Aqua-Lyte® didn’t cause the uncomfortable full, “bloated” feeling reported with the sugar-containing sports beverage. We believe Aqua-Lyte is the only zero-calorie, hydration and fitness beverage scientifically proven to hydrate as well as a leading sports drink.”

Dr. Douglas Kalman, one of the lead researchers with Miami Research Associates, said, “The findings from this study are real and relevant to any individual who is concerned about their hydration as well as their waistline. Beverages such as the one tested in this study, appear to offer many advantages over the typical and popular sports beverage and thus should be considered amongst the preferred drinks for the recreationally active individual.”

Latest Clinical Findings
A clinical trial comparing the hydration effects of Aqua-Lyte, a new zero-calorie hydration beverage to leading sugar/calorie-containing sports drink.

Methods
A prospective, randomized, open-label, comparator, crossover trial involving 10 healthy females (ages 18-45 inclusive) with a history of at least 6 months exercise experience. At each of two testing visits, separated by 3 days, subjects walked on a treadmill for 60 minutes at 3.5 mph and a 5% grade in hot, humid conditions (91 – 104F, 40 – 56% relative humidity) designed with the intent to induce a 2 – 3 % reduction in body weight (due to sweat losses). Subjects then consumed 2.5 cups of Aqua-Lyte® or the comparison beverage for each pound of body weight lost during the treadmill exercise. The order in which subjects received each beverage was determined by a randomized product-visit sequence assignment. Several measures of hydration (serum osmolality, hematocrit, serum sodium, serum potassium, urine specific gravity and body weight) were measured before and immediately after exercise, immediately after beverage consumption and at 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes after beverage consumption. At the same time periods, subjects recorded both their thirst and taste assessment of the product using a 10-point Likert scale.

Results
There were no statistically significant differences in any measure of hydration. Subjective comments regarding taste and comfort favored Aqua-Lyte® over the other sports drink.

Conclusions
Among active women, Aqua-Lyte® a zero-calorie water beverage rehydrates after exercise as well as a leading, sugar-containing hydration beverage.

The Replenade® used in the study, is now called Aqua-Lyte® due to a trademark change.
